Bringing Up Baby

Documenting the baby makin' experience. From Trying to Conceive, to Bringing Up Baby, I share all the laughs and all the horror.

I'm Jess, I'm 30 years old, I live in Minneapolis with The Husband, Jack (the girl dog with a boy name), and The Mac -- the person we made. He's pretty much the most awesome human being alive and easily the greatest thing I've ever done.

If you're interested, my primary blog is Scattered Jigsaw Thoughts.

I know, I know.  Thanksgiving hasn’t even happened yet so I shouldn’t be talking about Christmas, but I’m trying to be more organized this year so Christmas has been on my mind quite a bit lately.

For the last 4 years, The Husband and I have spent one night in December hunting down the perfect tree.  One that is tall, but not too tall.  Full, but not too full.  Green, aromatic, and inexpensive.  I am a Christmas tree purist and insist on getting a real one every year (although I also insist on busting out every curse word in the book when I’m stuck vacuuming up pine needles and scraping sap off furniture).

This year, though, I don’t think we’re going to be able to get a tree.  With Mac the Destroyer on the rampage at all times, I don’t see how it’s going to be possible for us to have any tree at all — especially not one that has stabby needles and fragile decorations.

I am SUPER bummed about this.  It is tough for me to get in the Christmas spirit (we have a super hectic holiday schedule that stresses me out every. single. year. and I can’t seem to learn to simply go with the flow) but the tree full of lights and decorations always does the job.  I’m racking my brain to come up with ways we can barricade the tree and keep Mac’s destructive curious fingers from tearing the whole tree down, but I’m drawing blanks.

So tell me — those of you who have/had young children — how do you put up a Christmas tree and keep both tree and toddler safe?

  2. missemee answered: leave the bottom half of the tree bare so he cant pull the deco off. looks funny but is very effective.
  3. westernmom-easternworld answered: I just enjoy my tree and teach the kiddo “don’t touch”. It takes a few days, but he caught on when he figured out I was serious. Good Luck!
  4. binocularity answered: We did Christmas lights in a tree shape on the wall, quite festive and not likely to fall on heads!
  5. mamaguru answered: This is what we did last year and it worked great with two tots.http://mamaguru.com/deck-the-halls-with-boughs-of-caution/
  6. ravelbycassie answered: Honestly, I am curious about the same thing only my child is only 10 months and crawling.
  7. sabine answered: Put up a tree on your wall? It would be 2-d but there’s no saying you can’t put up real lights with it! and a star on top!
  8. intensesilence answered: We got a big play pen type thing.. like the fencing type of gate.. and put it around the tree!
  9. onesong answered: after my baby brother pulled over the tree, my parents put a hook in the wall behind the tree & used string to fasten the tree to the hook.
  10. forgetfulmama answered: what if you have your normal tree but then have a small kiddie tree with kid ornaments that are okay to touch?
